Port Wentworth Today, June 2026: The City Gets Its Own Show

Port Wentworth is making moves: new parks, new programs and a downtown that is changing in real time. Now the city has its own show to keep up with all of it.

In the very first episode of Port Wentworth Today, hosts Lorallye Robertson and Dora Jenkins introduce the series and take you through everything happening in the city this June, from Anchor Park and downtown Coastal Highway to summer recreation, the Juneteenth celebration and a new community garden.

Anchor Park and the VyStar Pavilion

The city’s most anticipated development is almost here. Anchor Park is a 150 acre recreation, sports and entertainment complex just off I-95, set to open this summer.

The headline is the VyStar Pavilion, an open air amphitheater managed by Oak View Group and named for VyStar Credit Union. The city manager has called it a pivotal moment for Port Wentworth and the greater Savannah region. Billy Currington and Kip Moore are already on the calendar for Friday, August 7, with tickets on sale now.

Beyond the pavilion, Anchor Park includes the Ghost Pirates Ice Cove, with two regulation ice rinks, a restaurant and a pro shop, plus multi-use sports fields.

A New Main Street on Coastal Highway

If you have driven Coastal Highway through downtown Port Wentworth, you know the feeling: tractor trailers rolling through at all hours and heavy congestion. That is about to change.

Starting July 1, tractor trailer traffic is banned from the downtown stretch of Coastal Highway. The city spent more than a year working with the Georgia Department of Transportation to take local control of that part of the road. The goal is a walkable main street with room for new businesses, outdoor spaces and a downtown that matches everything else the city is building.

Summer With Port Wentworth Recreation

The Recreation Department has lined up its most packed summer yet, with sports clinics, skate nights and more for families.

  • Skate Night, Friday, June 12. Hero vs. Villain night, so come dressed as your favorite. Details on the Skate Night event page.
  • Open gym and pickleball. Twelve open gym dates in June, plus pickleball rentals.
  • Patriot Summer Sports Series. Football strength training, soccer conditioning and sports camps, open to residents and non-residents.
  • Fall sports registration is open now. Sign up between June 1 and June 14 and registration is free.

Juneteenth Celebration, Friday, June 19

Port Wentworth’s fourth annual Juneteenth celebration is Friday, June 19, from 5:30 to 9 PM behind City Hall. It is free and open to everyone.

Expect food trucks, vendors, a children’s area, historical storytelling and live performances, including Kwanzaa 365. Four years in, this celebration keeps growing. Get the details on the Juneteenth event page, and come say hello to the Live Like Locals team while you are there.

A Community Garden in the Older Part of Town

In one of the city’s older neighborhoods, on land where three houses once stood, Port Wentworth is growing a community garden with free food, native plants and a gathering space for neighbors.

The garden started as an idea from Mayor Tracy Saunders, who wanted community gardens in Port Wentworth because the older part of town sits in a food desert, where healthy, fresh and affordable food is hard to find. About 10 to 12 neighbors are already helping. They have planted vegetables, started pumpkins for a future pumpkin patch for kids, and hope to add fruit trees donated by the Savannah Tree Foundation.

Want to get involved or bring your kids out? Reach out through the Port Wentworth page and we will connect you.
