#1 Flags for the Fallen: 26,000 Flags | One Mission
Friday, May 22 – Monday, May 25, 2026 (see museum schedule for specific hours) The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, 175 Bourne Avenue, Pooler, GA
Event details on the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force website
Honor true American heroes at “Flags for the Fallen: 26,000 Flags | One Mission” at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. This powerful memorial pays tribute to the 26,000 airmen of the Eighth Air Force in World War II who never returned home.
The museum grounds are transformed into a moving flag garden of remembrance, featuring a 48-star American flag for each of the 26,000 fallen airmen-the very flag under which they served and, for many, are buried. Walking among the flags, you’ll feel the weight of history and the profound gratitude owed to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The museum’s mission is to preserve and share the stories of these heroes, and this display is a deeply meaningful way to reflect during Memorial Day weekend. It’s a humbling, unforgettable experience for families, veterans, and visitors of all ages.
That wraps up this week’s Live Like Locals Top Five Events with Renee LaSalle—from leadership breakfasts and Frozen fun to Savannah’s biggest party, a history-making tipoff, and a field of 26,000 flags. Whether you’re new to the Coastal Empire or you’ve called it home for years, these events are your ticket to living like a local between May 19 and May 25.
Mark your calendars, grab your friends and family, and get out there to experience the heart, history, and hometown pride that make our community so special. Until next time, keep exploring—and keep living like a local!
