Savannah Gathers Under the Stars for Miguel

A Sinatra night at the West Broad Bandshell on November 4 is raising money for a 12-year-old who has spent three and a half years fighting leukemia.

Next Wednesday, the West Broad Bandshell will fill with swing-era music, good food and a crowd of people who care about one kid. Sinatra Under the Stars is a benefit evening for Miguel Sutera, and every ticket, sponsorship and donation goes straight to him and his family.

It started like the flu

A few summers ago, Miguel was 9 and feeling sick. His family figured it was the flu. It was not. At the new Children’s Hospital at Memorial in Savannah, doctors quickly diagnosed him with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, known as T-ALL, an aggressive blood cancer.

Those first months were a fight for his life. Miguel was later transferred to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital to continue treatment. Since then he has been through extensive chemotherapy, blood transfusions, bone marrow testing, treatments given through the spine, seizures, hospital stays and serious complications affecting his body and central nervous system.

That is three and a half years. He is still moving forward.

The kid behind the diagnosis

Ask the people closest to him and they will not lead with the cancer. They will tell you Miguel makes jokes, performs magic tricks, loves to cook and will try any new food you put in front of him. He gives to the people he loves, and when things get hard he finds a way to make everyone around him laugh.

His grandmother, Bobbie Torres, known to Miguel as Mew Maw, has been with him since his first breath and has been caregiving alongside his mom the entire way. In Bobbie’s words, Miguel “has not allowed his sickness to define him.” He has an unusual tolerance for pain, a lot of faith and a habit of making the most of every day.

Many of the people behind this event knew Miguel when his family lived in Savannah, before he got sick. They are going all out for him now.

Where the money goes

Local businesses can step up

Star Sponsorships are open for businesses that want to put their name behind Miguel. Gold Star ($1,500, two available), Silver Star ($750, three available) and Copper Star ($500, five available) include logo placement, social media recognition, tickets and swag bags, with stage time and a band meet-and-greet at the top levels. Sponsorships are purchased on the ticket page.
